Although Roswell, Carlsbad, and Hobbs, NM, all offer limited scheduled airline service, El Paso International Airport (ELP) in El Paso, Texas, is the closest major commercial airport serving the southern New Mexico region. It is served by most major American air carriers with direct service to major hubs across the country and connections across the globe.
Fly into El Paso, then spending one (1) night upon arrival. There are plenty of hotels to accommodate any budget, so start your unforgettable adventure with a restful night's sleep.
Day 2 — Experience Guadalupe Mountains and Carlsbad Caverns
Feel free to spend the night in Carlsbad; however, rates there are often exorbitant (e.g. $250 USD), even at two- and three-star hotels. For better deals, drive forty-five minutes north to Artesia, NM, where rates are often 25%-75% cheaper, and at the same hotel chains, too. As an added bonus, you'll be forty-five minutes from your next day's adventures!
Day 3 — Visit the Extraterrestrial Capital of the World in Roswell, NM
What's life without a touch of conspiracy? Don your tin foil hats for an adventure through Roswell, NM, the de facto hometown of modern ufology since 1947. Don't miss the opportunities to visit the International UFO Museum & Research Center, a saucer-shaped McDonald's, and various otherworldly beacons like alien streetlights.
Despite it's out-of-this-world appeal, you can typically find hotel rates in Roswell that aren't. Consider your desired itinerary for the following day to determine accommodations. If you're visiting Alamogordo, stay in Roswell. If you're driving to White Sands and Las Cruces, return to Artesia. NM Highways 380 and 70 will take you to Alamogordo. NM Highways 82 and 70 will take you on to White Sands and Las Cruces.
